Program In Focus for December: The Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP) promotes better health care service in rural America. Established in August 1987 by the Reagan Administration, the Office was subsequently authorized by Congress in December 1987 and located in HRSA. Congress charged the Office with informing and advising the Department of Health and Human Services on matters affecting rural hospitals, and health care, co-ordinating activities within the department that relate to rural health care, and maintaining a national information clearinghouse. - Basic Life Support: Teaching Resource for Instructors in Prehospital Pediatrics (TRIPP) Second Edition [CD-ROM]
This CD-ROM resource manual was created for instructors of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) that assess and treat critically ill and injured patients. Topics include responding to different types of pediatric and adolescent emergencies, cultural competence, family centered care, disaster management, and psychological health issues affecting EMTs. - Findings Brief. One Year In: Sole Community Rural Independent Pharmacies and Medicare Part D (October 2007)
This brief discusses the experiences of 51 rural independently-owned pharmacies one year after implementation of the new Medicare Part D program to determine whether initial financial and administrative problems were resolved over time. It focuses on pharmacies that are the sole providers in their community and provides details on the study methods and results. - HRSA Care ACTION: Rules of Engagement in HIV/AIDS Care (September 2007)
This newsletter discusses outreach efforts that target people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). It provides examples of effective engagement and retention services from the Whitman-Walker Clinic (Washington, DC), the Brothers Saving Brothers project (Detroit, MI), and CareLink (Portland, OR). The newsletter explains the fundamentals for building partnerships that link PLWHA who are not receiving care to the HIV/AIDS service system. It includes figures and references. - Intraosseous Infusion. An Instructional Program for Healthcare Providers: Revised Edition, 2005 [CD-ROM]
This instructional video program provides health professionals with step-by-step instructions about performing intraosseous infusions in emergency situations for children under six years of age. Topics include guidelines for use, site preparation, needle insertion, how to use in cardiopulmonary arrest, required equipment, possible complications, and contraindications. The video program notes that this is a successful alternative and temporary solution when health professionals are unable to gain vascular access.
